Real time educational video for training anesthesiologists is developed by the researchers of the Duke University which was revealed at the Anesthesiology 2012 annual meeting. A new tool with an iPad attached to 3D Echocardiography machine could give better visualisation of anatomic structure of heart and vessels.
3-D transoesophageal echocardiography can give live display with a specialised ultrasound probe inserted into the oesophagus of the patient. The high quality images with minute details has given a new prospective to the cardiologists, anesthesiologists and echocardiographers. It is strongly recommended for the cardiac surgery patients by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and American Society of Echocardiography. Cardiac surgery requires better display of cardiac structure and functioning. With the use of this breakthrough technology, trainees can see and learn as if they are witnessing the surgery. Capture of the images, editing and annotation are done with in the short time and an educational video can be made with the help of mobile devices.
As of now, this new portable educational tool is used for the training of anaesthesiologists and the only mobile instrument used for this purpose is iPad. Dr Brandi Bottinger, M.D. of the cardiothoracic anaesthesia division, Duke University Hospital, says that this new teaching technique should be made available on multiple mobile devices and has to be analysed whether it can be used as a new teaching tool for echocardiography education aiming at better cardiac patient care.
